Team Phoenix and Birtley Basketball Club were established in September 2005 to facilitate basketball development in central and southern Gateshead as well as the neighbouring areas of Washington and Chester-le-street. From January 2006, Birtley Basketball Club have taken part in the CVL. Team Phoenix 'A' currently compete in CVL D2 and Team Phoenix 'B' ply their trade in CVL D3. The club is linked to Zorbas Basketball Team where post-16 players have the opportunity to play in TyneMet League Division 3.

Cardinal Hornets was launched in January this year in partnership with Eagles Community Foundation and Wrekenton Communities Matter. The club currently caters for U12s, U14s and U16s on a Thursday night at Cardinal Hume School. The response to the club has been phenomenal and it is currently the 5th largest club in Tyne & Wear with over 60 regular members.
Susan Hunter, ECF Club & Coach Development Officer, adds, “Cardinal Hornets has been a great success and has already exceeded expectations of a new basketball club. A huge thank you has to go out to the Wrekenton Communities Matter Team and all at Neighbourhood Management who have offered endless support and being paramount in the success that has been achieved so far.”
Last season the club was awarded 2* club accreditation and is working towards Clubmark.

The Ryton Ryders Basketball Club is a part of the Eagles Community Foundation (ECF) which offers basketball to boys and girls from grassroots level through to performance. Last season the club was awarded 2* club accreditation and is working towards Clubmark.
